McCREARY COUNTY JAIL FACING POSSIBLE SHUTDOWN
posted 12/03/2012 by wkcarroll@highland.net

While the doors at the McCreary County Jail are supposed to remain locked, at least to the inmates inside, the facility could be facing a more permanent shutdown according to a report in last week’s issue of The McCreary County Voice. While rumors of the local jail’s closing have been circulating for several months, especially since a number of violations were identified by the state’s Department of Corrections, The Voice reports that the closure may be “imminent.” That reportedly comes from unnamed sources, while Judge Executive Doug Stephens was unable to confirm the rumors as of late last week as he awaits word from the Department of Corrections on possibly future actions. Several issues appear to be at the heart of the shutdown discussions, including the series of inmate escapes in recent years, the conditions of the jail, and financial concerns facing the jail and the county.
