The May 2014 unemployment rates have been released for Kentucky’s 120 counties with mixed results for McCreary County. The May rate was up slightly over April from 12.1% to 12.4% last month. That rate is down slightly from one year ago when the May 2013 jobless rate for the county was 13%. McCreary County still ranks among the highest jobless rates in Kentucky behind only a few counties, including Jackson County at 17.7% which was the state’s highest rate of unemployed. The overall Lake Cumberland region’s jobless rate, which includes ten counties including McCreary County, was 8.6% for May down slightly from April’s 8.7%. Kentucky’s unemployment rate came in at 7.5% last month which was up from April’s 7.2% but was down from 8.2% a year ago. The US jobless rate was recorded at 6.1% for May 2014.
